The Shape Of Things To Come

The annual CoreNet conference “The Revolution of Experience” was held last week at the fantastic new Illumina venue in 1 Elizabeth Street. It was voted by many as the best conference yet and I agree. Congratulations to the Corenet team on such a successful event.

The wider CRE industry is clearly paying far more attention to the conference this year. A sell-out crowd is one example, but the real highlight and the number one photo op of the day was the unveiling of the Future Focus research. Get your copy and have a read.

For me, the highlight this year was conversation around the shape of the future; modular and circular. They are separate yet connected at the same time.

From a flexible, practical, financial, technological, and environmental standpoint, incorporating modular fitouts alongside circular practices is the only way forward.

Modular fitouts, in whatever shape, will reduce entry (fitout) and exit (make good) costs and help the environment as well. More importantly, it will help maximise the flexibility CRE tenants are yearning for.

Circular practices are more challenging because there is still a propensity to want new products rather than recycled, refurbished or preowned products. This is a longer-term shift that requires a change in mindset.

The way I see it, modularity is here and now and about to take off. Circularity is bubbling along in the background. The more modular we become, the more circular CRE will naturally become.

Together they could shape the future of design and fitouts.
